Meeting Report 3162 June 5th 2023

Prior to introducing Chair for the evening PP Ian Sanders Sergeant Barry Stewart invited Almoner PP Mike Williams to address the meeting. Mike asked members to remain upstanding to acknowledge the passing of past president and member Dean Sims. Deans passing comes only a couple of weeks after losing his wife Jessie. Members were asked to show their respect by showing a minutes silence. At the conclusion, tonight’s chair was introduced who opened meeting 3162 and welcomed members, guest speaker Julie Johnson and a very special welcome back to Rotarian Patsy Johnson. Ian asked after Trish and Alan reported that she still had a long way to go. Our collective thoughts are also with Trish and Alan.

President Kathy then asked pp Patsy to come forward and presented her with a 3 sapphire Paul Harris fellowship pin. Kathy said she had been holding onto it because as she wanted to present it personally to Patsy when she could attend a meeting.

PP Chair Ian then spoke about the Expo on Saturday which he attended with pp Brian Burt. He said it was a great experience and the message he got was for members to keep in mind when asked for help was to suggest to people “if you want something, join Rotary and initiate your idea and then get behind it” rather than just try and do everything for everyone. Ian and Brian were lucky enough to meet up with Kevin Shadbolt-Chairman of Australian Rotary Health Foundation when they were having coffee. Kevin had noticed Ian’s Rotary Badge and introduced himself. -Shows the power of Rotary!

PP Steve announced to members that due to hard work of Colin Bazeley we had been awarded a $500 grant to go toward the Village Fair this year. To be held on the first Saturday in November.

Also keep 17^th September free for the swap meet -will be supplying food.

Thanks to Ian Nys and Ron Lloyd the wheel will possibly be ready for the next meeting.

Julie Johnson reminded Rotarians that the One and All will dock back in Port Adelaide at 3pm on Saturday with the crew from Melbourne.

There being no more spots Ian invited everyone to enjoy their meal.

During the sergeant’s session eventual wheel winners were Chris Edmonds and Ron Lloyd. Michael Jacob and Alan Harris had both called for a redraw after their numbers came out because both had had recent wins.

Prior to his Facebook Funnies session Barry shared the microphone with members who wanted to share their favourite memories of Dean Sims. Members included Dr Bruce Eastick; Bob Hinderwell, Ian Sanders, Brian Burt, and Lance Hatcher.

Chairperson Ian then introduced the first guest speaker Nick Brown. Nick is part of the Lions Hearing dog program and had young pup Gary with him who proved a popular guest! Gary is sponsored by the Lions Club of Gawler. Nick said that 650 dogs are placed in Australia each year. All dogs are trained in South Australia and are trained to respond to sounds for the profoundly deaf. Each dog costs approximately $40,000 to train. Puppies are fostered and complete their socialisation and obedience training from 3 months to 10 months old then they go into intensive training from 10 months old. Different types of dogs are used in the program and they are also now looking at training dogs to assist diabetics.

PP Ian then introduced Julie Johnson the chair of Public Image. Julie has a long history with Galwer Rotary as her dad and is PP Mike Johnson. Julie has a team of 8 people and can be reached via email publicimage@rotary9510.org

Julie outlined the importance of being consistent in our branding and our language. For example decide if we are the Rotary club of Gawler or Gawler Rotary and use this consistently. Training is available in MyRotary look up public image.

Use the Facebook page but make sure all branding is the same.
QR codes are great additions to posters etc
Reach out to community radio stations.
Have public image position on the board
Public Image will assist you if you are unsure -they will help you optimise your branding and tell you if it isn’t right.

Julie displayed some of the banners etc that can be used at events. One thing to remember is when photos are being taken with them stand beside them not in front of them for optimum exposure.

Chair Ian thanked both guests and presented Julie with her certificate of Thanks before introducing Pres kathy for the wrap up.

Pres Kathy reminded members that next week is a public holiday so no meeting will be held. The following week guest speaker will be PP Mark Smeaton to talk about his recent adventures in the NT Ian Nys will be Chair.

Please RSVP for Changeover by 20^th June. No money accepted on the night so please either pay at the next meeting or via direct deposit.

Kathy then closed the meeting after members recited the Four-Way test.
