Pres Anthony opened Meeting 3232 and welcomed guests Kent and Ann Hallett from Olive Oli packaging and Lyn Hill.
Anthony began announcements by informing members that tonight was Cody’s final evening. Cody has looked after us for over 12 months and will be missed. Anthony led a round of applause for Cody to show our appreciation.
PE Kyle was approached by Bunyip Newspapers to see if we would like to once again collect the old newspapers as an ongoing fundraising opportunity. The papers would need to be collected from various locations and delivered to Lonsdale. Members expressed some concerns re effort Vs reward as we might find it hard to find people to volunteer and it would fall on 1 or 2 people and also storage would be an issue. Kyle to follow up and see if he can get more info.
Angela Youth committee are conducting a fundraiser in time for Christmas. The income will be used for an activity next year. The fundraiser is Jolly Socks.
This is a South Australian company, and the socks are 70% cotton. Socks available in many fun designs and sizes. The cost is $10 a pair although orders above 3 pairs will be rewarded with a $1 discount on each pair. Members requested the socks be on sale tonight and were generous with their sales. Limited stocks will be available on the 16th for people who missed out.
Members then enjoyed fellowship over dinner before Sergeant PP Barry conducted the wheelspin. Winners this week were Patsy, Bec and Margaret.
Barry entertained everyone with some new Facebook funnies before handing over to Pres Anthony to introduce guest speaker Kent Hallett from Olive oil Packaging services.
Ken started his presentation with a brief history and information session on Olive Oil before inviting everyone to taste different Olive Oils. As members and guests were given each sample Kent walked everyone through the process judges go through to identify different characteristics of each oil, encouraging everyone to identify different aromas and flavours. Kent explained that a good olive oil catches the back of your throat, with a peppery taste and makes you make a small cough. Things we were asked to look for were, Citrus, floral undertones; a balance of bitterness and pepperiness. When Tasting judges are presented with the lowest polyphenol content (antioxidants) first. One of the favourite oils presented was a lemon olive oil which was the gold medal winner in 2023 and silver medal in 2024. Making the lemon olive oil is very tricky because the maker needs to be able to work out just the right amount and timing of the lemon added to the Oil. The final Oil was flvoured with Basil and was served to King Charles on his recent visit to Australia.
Kent is a judge at both a National and International level. The first international competition was actually held in Adelaide and is now held all over the world. There are judging teams in Japan, China, Tunisia, Spain and Italy.
Ken gave the following tips:
- Olive Oil is best eaten close to harvest-Olive oil changes with time, loses pungency and bitterness
- Olive oil doesn’t like heat, air or light -do not store oil next to the stove top!
- A good and fresh olive oil smells fruity and tastes pleasantly sharp and bitter
- Please buy SA -if you can’t then buy Cobram estate. Cobram estate has 8 presses that can process 1000 of olives a day when running at half speed, this ensures the freshest oil is packaged.
- The price of olive oil has skyrocketed lately due to drought in some areas of Australia and flood in others.
- While at present there is no uses for the waste (cattle like the taste but don’t like the sharp bits of stone) someone is actually looking at manufacturing a compost. Kent said this is very exciting and not very far away.
At the conclusion of his presentation Ken had a Q & A session and everyone present went home with a little set of goodies including a booklet about Olive oil, a fridge magnet to assist in substituting butter in recipes to Olive oil, a children’s book and a stress ‘ball’ in the shape of Australia.
President Anthony thanked Kent and Ann for the their informative and fun session before thanking everyone for their attendance and reminder about paying for Christmas Dinner ASAP and bringing presents next week before closing meeting 3232 with the For Way test.
