Settling into my new role as president has been a busy but exciting experience. Things haven’t slowed down, but our members have made the transition easier by welcoming new ideas and helping me understand the traditions and routines that make our club what it is.
The club is its members—not just one person—and my aim is to encourage and guide, rather than simply take charge. I once came across a saying at a professional development session that’s always stuck with me: “A boss relies on authority and control, while a leader focuses on inspiration and teamwork.” Whether I’m working as a Scout Leader, teacher, Rotary President or mentor, I try to keep this in mind, and I plan to bring that spirit to every step in this role.
This week, we kicked off our guest speaker series for the Rotary year. PP Barry Stewart invited Oprea from OZKING Marketing to share his expertise on publicity and promotion with us. Barry had worked with Oprea to help boost his Mold Doctor business, and the results were impressive; things improved dramatically once Oprea's recommendations were put in place.
Oprea, the founder of OZKING, moved from Romania to Brisbane with his family, and later settled in Willaston after a visit to Adelaide at his daughter's suggestion. With a background in commercial graphic design and success in publishing and magazines, Oprea found his passion for marketing when his brother asked him for help. He quickly saw the need for tradespeople to understand more about marketing, and his business grew from there.
In 2024, Oprea was approached by SA Water to help market their services. He’s now on his third contract with them, focusing mainly on SA Water’s needs and keeping Mold Doctor as his only commercial client.
When asked about AI, Oprea described it as a useful tool that enhances the work of design businesses but emphasised that human expertise is still essential. He proudly displays the OZKING motto: “Powered by AI + Human Expertise,” showing his commitment to transparency, which sets him apart from many others in the industry.
Oprea also stressed the importance of consistency in promotion; suggesting, for instance, that posting once a week on platforms like Facebook and Instagram is far more effective than sporadic bursts.
He wrapped up his presentation by generously answering plenty of questions, especially those about SA Water and water quality, which sparked lots of interest among members.
At the completion of the Meeting members were reminded that next week will be the first meeting of the new committees and closed with the Four Way Test.
Yours in Rotary Angela Moore
