Chair for the evening Pres Anthony opened the meeting and welcomed guests Aiden Curtis (guest Speaker) and Rebecca Darke (future member).
Apologies were received from Geoff Benier, John Lyons, Julie Tekell, Kim Potger, Mark Forgie, Wayne Murphy, Margaret Leversedge and Sharine Allouche.
PP Mike Williams (Almoner) reported that Geoff had undergone further surgery and is now out of ICU but still in hospital. While he is not up to visitors at the moment he can accept phone calls.
PP Steve Barilla Thanked everyone for their efforts with the village Fair. Despite the heat, wind and the Pageant it was a very successful day with great feedback for vendors and public. The feedback re the presence of food vans was particularly good and is something we will do next year although we will make changes to where and how they are set up.
We have a couple of missing signs from around Town. If anyone has seen them let Steve know; he will contact Council to see if they are there.
Steve made a particular mention to the Air Cadets who were a fabulous presence at the fair not only helping with set up and taking down marquees and our food tent as well as manning their own marquee but their manners and willingness to give everything a go. Thank you also to Willows Men’s Shed and Rotary Club of Gawler Light for assisting in the erection and dismantling of the marquees.
The fair is a wonderful example of Rotary clubs of Gawler working together.
Members and Guests enjoyed time to chat over dinner before PP Barry presented his Sergeants Session. The wheel spin this evening was amusing this evening as neither the first (Patsy) or second (Guest Bec) winners elected to have chocolates over the $25. Bec actually had her number spun a second time and suggested the wheel was respun with the money eventually going to Angela.
Barry announced he has found a replacement for Fat Barry at next years fair and he has handed the baton onto his grandchildren! He then presented his Facebook funnies.
Pres Anthony introduced guest Speaker Aiden from the Bunyip newspaper.
Aiden gave an overview of the running of a country newspaper.
- particularly since the start of Covid it had become a main source of getting information and news out into the community.
- One of the difficulties the paper faces is people complaining that the paper doesn’t cover community events etc but Aiden said that often they don’t find out about them until its over and they need people to let them know in plenty of time when things are happening.
- News reporting has changed over time with more legal awareness and social media.
- Operating staff at the Bunyip consists of: 3 journalists; 3 photographers (1 FT ,2 PT); 1 editor; 1 sports editor; 3 part time admin; and 1 full time in the production office.
- The building has been sold and they will need to move mid 2025.
- While the coverage includes Gawler, Playford, Barossa and the Adelaide Plains there is not too much crossover with other local papers such as the Leader and the Plains Producer. However, some people believe it should only cover Gawler.
- Online presence and subscription is fairly low.
- The paper is a way for everyone to be heard e.g. through Letters to the editor, if the editor believes the information is untrue they will first suggest an edit to the author but if that is not accepted they will not publish it.
After thanking Aiden, Pres Anthony closed the meeting with the Four way test and reminded Board members the meeting would follow.
