President John opened the meeting 3186 and asked members to please observe a minute’s silence in memory of the late Ian Nys who sadly passed away in the RAH on Wednesday evening. A slide show of photos of Ian in action before Mark Smeaton, President John Lyons, Brian Burt and Barry Stewart paid tribute to Ian.
Pres John then called for members to take fill spots if required.
  • The arrangements for the Gawler Apex carols were finalised (unfortunately they were later cancelled due to extreme weather warnings); arrangements for the Two Wells Primary School evening were also finalised.
As a mark of respect for Ian, Sergeant Barry cancelled his usual performance of the sergeants session. However, Pres John did conduct the Wheel spin as it was pointed out that Ian, with Ron Lloyd, went to a lot of effort to reconstruct it.
After Dinner Pres John introduced guest speaker Harold Wilson, the Secretary and Treasurer of the Gawler Branch of the Royal Flying Doctor Service to present information about the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
The following report by Brian Burt appeared in the Bunyip newspaper.
The Royal Flying Doctor Service is one of the largest and most comprehensive aeromedical organisations globally, providing extensive primary health care and 24-hour emergency service to people who live, work, and travel across the 7.69 million square kilometres of Australia.  It was founded by Presbyterian Pastor John Flynn in 1928.
Today, the RFDS has over 80 specially built and equipped high tech aircraft and 300 ambulances/road vehicles.  It employs almost 2,000 people across 23 bases. The service has about 900 contacts per day.
Running costs and salaries are provided by the Commonwealth Government, but aircraft are wholly funded by and public and corporate support.
President John thanked Harold for his informative talk and presented him with a certificate of appreciation indicating that a donation had been made to fund 45 children to be immunised against Polio.
He then closed meeting 3186.
