Meeting Report 3172 August 21st 2023

PP Barry Stewart introduced the chair for the evening- Ian Nys. Ian welcomed members and guests, then acknowledged the apologies before introducing Major Darren from the Salvation Army Gawler to address the meeting.
Darren asked us to once again support the Hope Cup, particularly the dinner this Friday evening and the actual cricket match on November 19th at Sandy Creek. Our own PP mark Smeaton has indicated he will once again join the team. The major beneficiary for this years Hope Cup will be their Lockers for Life project. This initiative allows homeless people a safe place to store their things during the day so they can get about their business and not worry about the stigma of having to push their belongings and bedding around all day or risk having it moved or taken. This allows them to attend meetings and appointments. One example of the benefits of this has seen 1 man who had been homeless for 26 years is now a volunteer at the Salvation Army. They have also bought him a caravan to live in. There is a trust set up for clients to access specialists etc. which would otherwise be impossible.
The second initiative to benefit is the Youth at Risk project which has been started in a local high school.
Ian thanked Darren and asked members who had messages to come forward.
PP Steve Barilla Steve handed out rosters and reminded members who have volunteered to assist with show parking this weekend that we are at the Harry Chenowith Reserve.
PP Mike Williams -Almoner
- Jean Lloyd is now home but her recovery is still very slow.
- Lucille Meldrum is in hospital and has been undergoing tests but still has a long way to go with her recovery.
PP Brian Burt wanted to acknowledge that our thoughts are with PP Mike W and his family with the sad loss of his brother in the past week.
Brian then summarised the local regionalisation project and urged members to read the emails that have been received this week.
After dinner, Chair Ian introduced Barry for his sergeant’s session who conducted the wheel spin with the winning numbers going to Harrison Clinch, Mark Smeaton and
Sergeant at Arms PP Barry then presented his Bunyip roundup and Facebook funnies.
Chair Ian introduced tonight’s guest speaker, Gawler Rotarian Mark Forgie to present a report on his recent trip to Iceland.
Mark presented a slide show of some very interesting photo’s he took on the trip.
Mark and Giselle travelled from New York to Reykjavik, Iceland. They travelled down the Norwegian coast to Bergen. In New York Mark had a very large Rueban sandwich! Mark said he enjoys these sandwiches but has never seen one so big (nevertheless he ate it!!). They travelled down the Hudson River and showed photos of the smoke that had travelled from the recent Canadian fires. From New York they travelled to Halifax and saw the gravestones of people who lost their lives on the Titanic.
They were unable to stop in Greenland because of the ice flows. They did travel to Spitsbergen which is an ice-free port. Spitsbergen used to have 6 large coal mines but now there is only 1. It is also the home of the International Seed Store where there is a sample of every known seed in the seed bank.
One of the interesting photo’s Mark showed was a sign indicating that you cannot pass the point without a gun for protection against Polar Bears. However, if you do shoot one you have to be able to justify it really well to authorities.
Besides cruising, some of the other activities Mark and Giselle enjoyed on the trip were hiking, quad bike riding and train rides. Mark was particularly impressed by the architecture and bridge building over roads for the train in Dusseldorf. The line was erected in 1905 above the street and is still in use today.
At the conclusion of the presentation Ian thanked Mark and invited Pres John to close meeting 3172 with the four way test.
