Meeting 3159 was a joint meeting with Rotary Club of Gawler Light held upstairs at Nixon’s.
Pres Kathy opened our meeting and welcomed members and guests before handing over to RC Gawler Light Pres Steve McLachlan to open their meeting -meeting 1345 and gave a short roundup of their activities and messages.
All assembled were then given an opportunity to chat over their meal.
PPand Chair Colin then introduced Barry for his sergeant’s session. The wheel winners this week were Dick Milner from Gawler Light, Wayne Murphy and Colin Bazeley-who is going to Europe for 4 months so it was a nice going away present!
Following Barry’s session, Steve McLachlanpresented a short information session on the shelter bag project Gawler Light have undertaken in cooperation with Gawler Council, SAPOL and the Salvation Army. This entails purchasing good quality swags to be distributed to the homeless around the area. The original purchase was 15 bags 9 of which have been handed out already. Gawler Light are looking at expanding this project and looking at partnering with other clubs. Following the talk Gawler Pres Kathy presented Steve with a cheque for $800 on behalf of the club. This will enable the purchase of 10 more shelter bags.
Steve then introduced guest speaker Vivienne Goodenough from SC Strathalbyn. Steve had originally approached Vivienne to speak at their meeting but it was decided that rather than Vivienne travel twice she could speak to both clubs together because RC Galwer had also enquired.
Vivienne was speaking about a project they run in partnership with Heart of the Nation. In 2017 they had originally purchased an Automated External Defibrillator [AED] and publicised it.
In Jan 2022 a local resident had a cardiac arrest and his son remembered seeing the AED on a wall in the town. While the gentleman passed away the family was thankful to the club for giving them a chance to have more time and to know they did everything they could. At the gentleman’s funeral $1500 was raised and given to the RC Strathalbyn to purchase another AED. This started the project. They contacted Greg Page CEO and founder of the Company Heart of the Nation and he came on board.
The problem is we need to:
- Raise public awareness
- Having enough with public access
- Register the current units with Heart of the Nation so they are visible on the App.
Rotary can
- fundraise to purchase units
- spread the word and encourage community clubs etc to purchase one
- become a champion-looking after AEDs
- have owners have their accessible to the community
- get the owners to register theirs on the free App
- if they already have one they can purchase a GPS tracker separately
When someone purchase an AED and nominates our club Greg donates $250 back to the club.
Vivienne then demonstrated how to access the AED.
Colin Presented Vivienne with a certificate and explained it is our tradition to make a donation to vaccinate 45 children against Polio on the guest speakers behalf.
