PP Barry Stewart introduced the chair for the evening- Pres. John Lyons. John welcomed members and guests to a important meeting about the Regionalisation Project, then acknowledged the apologies before introducing members who had messages to come forward.
PP Brian Burt
- Attended the Royal Show on Friday for the presentation at the Police Officer of the Year. He was proud to see his nominee Snr Constable Gary Wills named as the winner of the award. Gary will be our guest speaker next week.
PP Treasurer Kim Potger
- Has had a call from the Lyall Mac hospital to let him know they have equipment to be collected for the Donations in Kind. He asked for a volunteer to help him collect it.
PP Ron Lloyd
- Thanked his team for assisting the Ride Against Suicide at Two Wells. Despite a shaky start due to discovering the sausages had been left in Gawler it was a successful morning. Ron did suggest the Pres needs more practice to become proficient but apprentice Margaret is now fully qualified.
PP Steve Barilla
- Handed out rosters volunteers for the Swap Meet.
After dinner, Sergeant Barry conducted the wheel spin. Harrison Clinch was the guest spinner this week and spun winning numbers for Deb W, Ian S and Mike W. Congratulations to all.
Barry then concluded his session with his usual Facebook funnies and Bunyip Roundup before introducing Pres John for the Regionalisation Project discussion.
Pres John invited DGE and past Gawler President Marie-Louise Lees to present the facts first.
- Currently Rotary has 34 zones, Australia is part of Zone 8. Situated in the South Pacific, the Zone includes Australia, New Zealand, American Samoa, Cook Islands, Fiji, French Polynesia, Kiribati, Nauru, New Caledonia, Norfolk Island, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Timor Leste, Tonga and Vanuatu. While some other zones are staying stable or growing this zone is dropping below average.
- In this model clubs and members have no say who their District Governor will be.
In the New Model
- Groupings will be known as communities they will be smaller than current districts. Clubs are able to choose who we are with -perhaps we would like to pair with another club who is service focussed or youth focussed; and how we meet. E.g., some people find attending face to face meeting hard geographically so e-meetings would suit better.
- We would have access to specialists in the field through Rotary specialists e.g. engineers, building specialists.
- Leadership is structure is leadership not governing. Members can apply for any positions on the regional council.
President John then raised his concerns he had with the model.
- His biggest concern, John felt that we would lose our identity as a successful and growing club- Marie-Louise emphasised that nothing would change at club level., It is more to do with the governance and giving clubs more flexibility.
- members had the opportunity to have their say and ask questions of Marie -Louise. Pres John was under the impression that we are voting to be part of the project or not but Marie-Louise explained that we already did that last year and the outcome from the majority of clubs was to go ahead so this is happening. The process we are actually being asked at the moment is to nominate which clubs (or type of clubs) we would like to partner with eg. Social, service. Youth oriented, overseas service.
